This course is a study of the major trends and themes in British literature from Romanticism to the mid-twentieth century. By reading and responding critically to works from the Romantic through Modern periods, students will gain an understanding of British literature as well as the various cultural, societal, political, religious, and linguistic influences that shaped it. The course will include works by Romantic-era authors such as Blake, Byron, Wordsworth, Coleridge, the Shelleys, and Keats; Victorian writers such as Dickens, Tennyson, the Brownings, and Arnold; and nineteenth and twentieth century works by such writers as Hardy, Yeats, Lawrence, Joyce, and Woolf.
