This course is a survey of the major trends and themes in British literature from the eighth through the eighteenth centuries. By reading and responding critically to early works such as the Old English epic Beowulf, Middle English works by writers such as Chaucer and Langland, and continuing through the Renaissance (Shakespeare, Marlowe, More) to the Restoration and writings by Milton, Dryden, Swift, Pope, and Johnson, students will gain an understanding of the various cultural, societal, political, religious, and linguistic influences that shaped British literature.
