This study of the literary and historical development of American Drama and theatre gives major consideration to the plays and contributions of important playwrights since the beginning of the 20th century. It includes a close study of representative plays and their relation to technical developments in the American theatre, for example the innovative staging associated with Wilder's Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth, or the symbolic settings associated with O'Neill' s Desire Under the Elms . The coursefocuses on the emergence of significant American drama and its impact on the American stage. Offered through Weekend College only. Also listed as English 243.
