This introductory course features major plays by Shakespeare with an emphasis on their place in the theatre. We shall also consider historical context, language, genre, and theoretical influences on recent criticism. Plays representing early and late periods such as Twelfth Night, Richard II, I Henry IV, Hamlet, Measure for Measure, King Lear, Antony and Cleopatra, and The Winter's Tale, may be included.
