3 credits. Places the more than 300 tribal governments in the context of Indian and United States history. Examines the development of contemporary tribal governments with emphasis on their place as the third form of government in the United States. The concepts of sovereignty, tribal jurisdiction, and the efforts of tribal governments to govern well are analyzed with attention to the characteristics of contemporary Indian societies. Attention will be given to Indian political cultures. F
