Uses economic concepts to explain historical developments in the American economy, beginning with hunter-gatherers who crossed the Bering land bridge around 12,000 B.C. Main topics include Native American economies, European exploration and conquest, the colonial economies, indentured servitude, the American Revolution, the U.S. Constitution, westward expansion, transportation, the Industrial Revolution, state banking and free banking, slavery, the Civil War, post-bellum agriculture, the rise of big business and antitrust, banking panics, the Federal Reserve Act, the First and Second World Wars, the New Deal, and the growth of government in postwar economy.
