Seventeenth-century Spanish and French explorations and interaction with the Indians; settlement and organization of the Louisiana territory; lead mining and the fur trade; the Louisiana Purchase; the Missouri territory; the struggle for statehood and slavery; antebellum politics; banking and internal improvements; westward expansion; Civil War and reconstruction; postwar agrarian politics, industrialization; Irish, German, and southern European immigration; the Progressive reforms--political and economic change; and twentieth-century social changes and political developments.
