A critical study of the role of news media in leading Western democracies, in defending basic human rights such as freedom of speech, upholding individual responsibilities, restraining government and business, and shaping public perceptions of the world. A historical overview of that role in the United States, Canada, France and Britain since the 18th century, focusing on differences in political culture, the role of the media in national and international conflict, the differences between privately-owned and state-controlled media, and the pressures to redefine the role of the media in the 21st century.
