Advanced study of text illustration, primarily in book form, in western and non-western cultures from c.3500 BC to the present. Emphasis on the relationship between text and image and the evolution of illustration cycles. Involves advanced readings, extensive writing, including several short essays and a research project with multiple stages of preparation and review, and a class presentation. (Spring). Liberal arts. Approved AWR. Prerequisite: one 300-level art history course.
