Deals with the death penalty as an element of American criminal justice policy. Topics include the development of the modern system of capital punishment; the responsibilities and experiences of attorneys, jurors, prison personnel and others in its implementation; the social network of death row; and empirical research on deterrence, sentencing disparities by race, the death penalty's fiscal impact, the estimated probability of miscarriages of justice, and other issues in the current policy debate.
