This course examines selected critical health issues of students and the role of schools and teachers in addressing such issues and promoting student health. Included in the course is an exploration of student health status; impact of such factors as culture, heritage and socioeconomic level on health and learning; youth risk behaviors; personal health issues related to such areas as nutrition, fitness and emotional health; safety education, including such areas as fire and arson prevention, child abduction, abusive or dangerous environments and violence prevention/intervention; alcohol, tobacco and other drugs prevention/intervention; and skills needed to protect and promote health as related to each of the course content areas. Course meets all health-related SED teacher certification requirements for non-elementary education majors other than the child abuse identification and reporting requirements.
