Analyzes 19th- and 20th Century Latin America ? history of struggle against colonial legacies, as well as new forms of economic and military oppression associated with dependent capitalist development. Asks students to consider the meanings of national independence in a region sharply divided by race and class, where peasants, workers and women have fought for political rights, sometimes winning revolutions, and where foreign influences limit state autonomy. 3 Cr.
