The history of and current trends in anthropological theories of gender. Specific issues are raised in the form of questions, including: On what bases is gender identity constructed? What factors affect the relative status of men and women in different cultures? How many genders are there? What constitutes "femininity" and "masculinity" cross-culturally? Theoretical issues in the literature are linked to policy debates throughout the world, such as those over gay families, female genital cutting, abortion, and the use of new reproductive technologies. A Ant 381Z & A Wss 381Z are the writing intensive versions of A Ant 381 & A Wss 381; only one of the four courses may be taken for credit. Prerequisite(s): one course in anthropology or sociology.
