This course traces the complex history of women in modern Japan from the nineteenth century to the present, presenting multiple experiences and perspectives drawn from a diverse group of women ranging from housewives to factory workers and from radical revolutionaries to powerful political leaders. With an emphasis on the many social, economic, educational, and political changes at work during this period, this course will examine the interplay between a number of issues as they relate to the lives of women and include such topics as domesticity, production, consumption, class, and sexuality, as well as the ways in which the images and practices associated with each continue to shift and change over time. Prerequisite(s): AEAS270 or AEAJ384 or AEAJ385.
