Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. This course will help teachers focus on those literacy skills essential for the needs of each student. It will include modeling the process necessary for literacy and learning concepts in a subject area and instructing students so they can become independent learners. The development of vocabulary, comprehension and study/reference skills in grades 7-12 will be covered. Causes of literacy problems, assessment procedures, and organization of a sound literacy program are stressed. Principles learned will be applied in classroom settings. A minimum of ten (10) hours of field experiences is required. This course meets secondary reading methods requirements.
