Spring semester, alternate years. 3 semester hours. An in-depth study of American poetry in the twentieth-century, focusing on representative poets in the context of literary and cultural history. Representative poets include Pound, Lowell, HD, Eliot, Frost, Stevens, Williams, Oppen, Niedecker, Sexton, Rich, Kerouac, Rexroth, and Ronan. Particular emphasis is on developing and strengthening students' skills in the close reading of poetry.
