NewYork City had and continues to have a profound impact on jazz. This January term study/travel course will focus on the NYC jazz experience including the musicians, the clubs where they played, and the history surrounding great events in jazz history. Heavy emphasis will be placed on the Harlem Renaissance's development and collapse, the role of race and geography, and the influence that the NYC jazz scene has had on the culture of the rest of the country and the world. The course will include travel to New York city to visit important sites in the NY jazz scene, interview current jazz musicians and promoters and attend the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) Annual Conference. Three hours. Staff.
