This course is designed as an introduction to the principles of music and its place within Western culture. Students will explore a broad spectrum of music, ranging from chant to symphonies to popular song, through weekly listening assignments, class discussion and lectures, and concert attendance. Emphasis will be placed on developing a vocabulary for interpreting and discussing musical language, as well as becoming observant participants of the concert experience. Three hours.
