This course surveys the history of slavery in the Western Hemisphere. Primary emphases include: the role of slavery in the colonial expansion of Europe; the emergence of a unique ideology of slavery in the southern United States; and the creation of Afro-Caribbean and African-American cultures that enabled Blacks to challenge slavery.
