This course surveys the history of the United States from the end of Reconstruction in 1877 to the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Primary emphases include: the rise of big business and the organization of labor; the growth of cities and the creation of urban politics; the agrarian revolt and the Progressive reform movement; the transformation of American manners and culture; and the emergence of the United States as a world power.
