This course provides an overview of Latin America through the 1820s, beginning with the pre-1492 American and Iberian backgrounds. Topics include: Spanish and Portuguese conquest and colonization; Iberian imperialism and the Atlantic World; race and slavery; socio-economic and cultural patterns; and the struggles for independence and nation building.
