This course provides an overview of the development of the Middle East from the birth of Islam to the rise of the Ottoman Empire. It seeks to acquaint students with the political, socio-economic, cultural, and religious forces that shaped the lives of Middle Eastern peoples during this period. Topics include: the life of the Prophet Muhammad; Islamic belief (Sunni and Shi'i) and institutions; the foundation of the Islamic states; the Umayyad and Abbasid Empires; the Mongol invasions; and the Crusades.
