An examination of the various ways in which women (both writers and literary characters) have seen themselves and have been seen in a male-dominated society. The readings will include the works of such women as Madame de Sevigne, Madame de LaFayette, Madame de Stael, George Sand, Colette, Simone de Beauvoir, and Marguerite Duras, as well as works whose central characters are women, including Laclos' Liasons Dangereuses, Flaubert's Madame Bovary, and Mauriac's Therese Desqueyroux.
