Readings in English translation of the epics of Homer, Hesiod, Apollonius, Vergil, Lucretius, Lucan, and Statius. Special attention will be given to oral formulaic composition, the literary epic, the didactic epic, literary conventions and traditions, and the influence of the genre onWestern literature.
