This course provides an overview of the development of mathematical reasoning skills in elementary students (preK-6) and examines the implications for the design of effective instruction. Encompassed in this course is the integration of concrete manipulatives in learning to teach mathematics as well as other content areas. Strategies for fostering an understanding of computational and problem-solving skills needed for mathematics instruction are emphasized. A fieldwork component is included. EDUC 227 and 228 may not be taken during the same semester unless you are a junior and have special permission from the department chair. Prerequisites: EDUC 220-221. Three hours. Staff.
