This course will explore the fascinating artistic production of China and Japan, two countries closely interconnected through cultural and religious ties. The arts of these countries show at once persistent thematic continuity, and impressive stylistic innovation throughout the centuries. We will examine expressions in painting, sculpture, the decorative arts and architecture and their meaning and impact within their social, economic, political and religious context. Three hours.
