This course will provide an overview of the impact of African art in the Americas, including that found in the United States, the Caribbean, and parts of South America. The course will examine the Black aesthetic that has developed in the Diaspora as a result of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, as well as explore the ways in which art (both visual and performance) has been used to define Black identity and shape the political and social struggles of the 20th century.
