The use of alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, prescription drugs, and illicit drugs are explored, including explanations for misuse and dependence with emphasis on the economic and social costs to society. The role of the criminal justice system as an agent of social control in the containment of chemical dependence and abuse are also considered.
