The focus of this course is the study of the so-called "novela realista" or the Spanish novel of the 19th century. It explores cultural, literary and socioeconomic influences on the novel as well as the theory and the practice of this genre in the 19th century. Texts of 19th century Spanish authors are accompanied by selected theoretical readings on the novel written by twentieth-century critics Miguel de Unamuno, Jose Ortega y Gasset, M. Bakhtin, Doritt Cohn, and Gerard Genette, among others. 3 hours lecture.
