This course provides students with an introduction to the scientific study of the Spanish language. It explores the phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic systems of the language within the context of current linguistic theories. It also gives special attention to the notion of linguistic variation and to sociolinguistic and pragmatic aspects of the language and how they are manifested in the various communitites that constitute the Spanish-speaking world. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the structure and functionality of the Spanish language through a field study. Taught in Spanish. 3 hours lecture.
