The course will address the practical and political issues of defining, measuring, and responding to social deviance (e.g., mental illness, drug use, etc.). The course will concentrate on the role of formal agencies and institutions that deal with deviance and will examine problems in assessing various policy alternatives (e.g., decriminalization, deinstitutionalization, treatment, etc.). 3 hours lecture.
