An investigation of the two methodologies that dominate speech and natural language processing: rule-based and probabilistic system design. The two methodologies will be compared in light of their suitability for language processing applications in syntactic and morphological analysis, speech synthesis and recognition, and text classification and information retrieval. 3 hours lecture.
