3 hours. Investigation of the ethnic diversity of American literature in its cultural context, with a focus on texts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In studying a variety of ethnic American voices, students become aware of social and political issues as well as commonalities of the American experience. Texts and authors will vary with the instructor but may include Hispanic, African-American, Asian- American, Jewish-American, and Native-American literature, among others. Spring odd years.
