After an introduction to the age of sectional controversy, major topics include: the Compromise of 1850; the Kansas-Nebraska Act; the Dred Scott decision; John Brown's raids; the election of 1860; the military campaigns of the Civil War; the governmental and home front activities of the war; and political, economic, and social reconstruction.
