3 Credit Hours Prerequisites: ECO 221 This course examines the role that money, interest rates and financial intermediaries (in particular, the banking system) play in the operation of the U.S. and global economy. Therefore, the aim of the course is to give students an overview of the U.S. financial system and an understanding of the theory and practice of monetary policy. The topics will be a blend of theoretical modeling and empirical discourses. Students will examine how current and historical events are reshaping the industry. Attention will be given to the basic analytics of managing a bank's exposure to liquidity, credit, and market risk. In addition, students will consider how to evaluate and compare the risk exposures and performance of individual banks, while evaluating their commitment to the common good through heuristics such as the extent of their involvement in the subprime debacle.
