3 Credit Hours Prerequisite: ENG 112 Offered every Fall semester Beginning with the German roots of the English language, the course will trace the internal development of English sounds, words, and syntax through the Old English, Middle English, Early Modern and Modern English periods. Attention will also be given to external influences such as the Viking and Norman invasions, Renaissance learning with its influx of classical vocabulary, the rise of standards in the eighteenth century, and the effects of exportation of English to colonies such as North America, India, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Africa.
