The rise of opera, oratorio, and cantata; the development of idiomatic instrumental music for keyboard and chamber instruments; sonata, suite, and concerto. Emphasis will be placed on the works of Monteverdi, Schutz, Purcell, Corelli, Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Couperin, Rameau, Handel, and Bach.
