This is the first course in the social work practice sequence and presents the generalist model with emphasis on work with individuals and families. Social Work Practice I is designed to introduce the student to the skills and processes of social work. Content will include the theoretical and philosophical bases of the generalist model, intervention processes, and the legal and ethical parameters of practice. Fundamental principles of interviewing and record-keeping will be presented. The focus of the course is on the ethical application of practice theory. Participation in experiential activity and demonstration of basic helping skills are expected. Prerequisites: admission to the social work program; SWK 101, 201, 225, and 301 or 302.
