[Choice:HU] This course is a survey of Eurasian history beginning from the Byzantine Empire through Kievan Russia and other Middle Age principalities to the present. The emphasis is on the periods since the establishment of Muscovite Russia and Ottoman Empire with such topics as leadership and succession; the role of Orthodox Church and Islam and other eastern religions on the development of the distinctive cultures in the region; outside influences and relationships with neighbors, colonization; efforts of reforms and role of the state in Russian Empire, revolutionary movements, the evolution of social, political and economic institutions. The use of novels, poetry, arts and films will complement historical analysis. Prerequisites & Notes This course is offered every even-numbered spring. Credits: 3
