This course provides students with a comparative survey of major ideological, political, economic, and cultural developments in Europe in the 20th century. This study will examine World War I and the Peace of Versailles, the Bolshevik Revolution and Civil War in Russia, the crisis of the western democracies, totalitarian movements such as Fascism and Nazism, the impact of World War II, the Cold War, postwar reconstruction and economic revival, European socialism and the emergence of a European Community, Eastern European transformation in 1990's, and cultural and social trends, all of which shape a modern European perspective. Equal emphasis on both Eastern and Western Europe will illuminate broad patterns of change and continuity across the continent. The use of novels, memoirs, and films will complement historical analysis. Prerequisites & Notes The prerequisite is sophomore standing. This course is offered every odd-numbered fall. Credits: 3
