This course will focus on the growth of royal and republican governments in Europe, the major wars and revolutions, including the Napoleonic era and its impact. It will examine such themes as Enlightenment, Romanticism, the industrial revolution, socialism and Marxism, national unification movements, European expansion, the origins of World War I, and major cultural and intellectual developments. The use of novels, arts and films will complement historical analysis. Prerequisites & Notes The prerequisite is sophomore standing or permission. This course is offered every even-numbered fall.
