This seminar course covers the period from the contraction of the Roman Empire to the fi rst stirrings of the Renaissance, circa 1450. Political events such as the consolidation and growth of national monarchies in France and England are discussed, but emphasis is placed on the intellectual, economic, and social currents of the age.
