A general introduction to major issues in the four central areas of philosophical inquiry: theory of knowledge, philosophy of mind, ethics, and political philosophy. Topics include the nature of perception and knowledge, confl icting defi nitions of truth, the scientifi c method and the growth of knowledge, free will and responsibility, artifi cial intelligence, pleasure and happiness, the foundations of our moral beliefs, the legitimization of political authority, the tension between liberty and equality in a democracy, and social justice.
