This course will survey major southern writers such as Mark Twain, William Faulkner, James Dickey, Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, Bobbie Ann Mason, Charles Chestnutt, Kate Chopin, Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, Richard Wright, Katherine Ann Porter, and others. Lectures and class discussions will focus on regional and cultural differences; race, gender, and class issues; historical movements; humor; and storytelling. Prerequisite: HU-1222 STCW: None
