The overall goal of this course is to contribute to the reduction of the growing toll of disasters in the United States (deaths and injuries, property loss, environmental degradation, etc.) by providing an understanding of a process that provides a framework that may be applied at all levels of communities and governments. This hazards risk management process can be used to identify, analyze, consider, implement and monitor a wide range of measures that can contribute to the public well-being. The hazards risk management process, as described and applied in this course, provides a general philosophy, description, and use of specifi c tools and methods that can be utilized to manage the risk associated with the hazards facing a community.
