An examination of the dimensions of the social experiences of African Americans. The course will span from slavery to the present with significant focus on the late 20th century. Analyses of interpersonal and institutional relationships from interdisciplinary perspectives. Themes of racial socialization and identity, the nature of prejudice, diversity within the African American community on the basis of gender, class and other factors, and demographic trends/patterns will be explored. 3 credits.
