The focus of the course will be on the concept of modernization; why, when and how was life in America evolving toward those characteristics we consider part of modern life? Central topics will include cultural interaction, daily life, the development of a new society, American exceptionalism, the evolution of American intellectual thought,democratization, social movements, and the development of an American literature.
