3 cr. This course will introduce students to the major developments in American social, intellectual, and cultural history from discovery through the Civil War. The focus of the course will be on the concept of modernization; why, when and how was life in America evolving toward those characteristics we consider part of modern life? Central topics will include cultural interaction, daily life, the development of a new society, American exceptionalism, the evolution of American intellectual thought,democratization, social movements, and the development of an American literature.
