Particular attention will be paid to cultural processes in cities, including the making of neighborhoods, the deployment of urban myths and folklore, the linking of cultural ideas about race, ethnicity and class in defining urban space, tourism, urban social policy, travel and images of cities and the making of urban consumers. Students will draw on theories and methods developed in class in order to design and carry out a field project in the New Orleans metropolitan area.
