The intellectual ferment of the Enlightenment has been given the credit and the blame for all things modern-from the concept of human rights and the democracies it has engendered to the subversion of those rights in the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century. Exploration of the ideas of the Enlightenment and their political context and attempt to answer the question of how such an important development in human history can be viewed in such contradictory ways. Courses numbered 320x to 321x consider topics in the political, social, intellectual, religious, and/or economic history of selected European nations.
