2 hours. This course provides an introduction to the optical spectra of solids. Materials discussed will include crystalline and amorphous ceramics, metals, semi-conductors, and polymers. The course will consider the primary optical phenomena that occur between the ultraviolet and infrared edges. A number of applications of optical materials that are based on their optical spectra will be discussed, including lasers, phosphors, solar cells, infrared windows, optical sensors, and photochromic/electrochromic materials.
